Session 2
April 19,2017
Today students learned about habitats. Habitat is a natural environment of an organism. They were tasked with creating shelters for creatures made using pipe cleaners and UV beads. The effectiveness of the shelter was tested by taking it outside and leaving it there for a couple of minutes. We then checked the animals to make sure that UV beads did not change color. If the beads changed color, the shelter was not perfect.

Today students continued to learn about density. Students performed an experiment using eggs. They noticed that egg sinks in water since it is denser than water. When we increase the density of water by adding sugar (or salt) the egg floats.
The students also used their previous knowledge about density and observed that density of water could be increased by adding honey, corn syrup or maple syrup since their density was higher than that of water.

Today students learned about mass, volume and density. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Volume is the amount of space the object occupies and density is mass / volume.
Students were given various liquids (arranged from greatest to least dense) - honey, corn syrup, maple syrup, water, rubbing alcohol, vegetable oil and lamp oil, and were requested to arrange them in descending order based on their density. Later on they tested their hypothesis.

Today students learned about siphon. They learned that siphon is a device (a u shaped tube) that allows water to flow, sometimes against gravity. They also learned that the water pressure and water's surface tension makes them flow out of the siphon.
The students made their own siphon using a cup and bendy straw.

Today students learned about renewable and non renewable resources. We talked about wind mill and how we can harness its power. Students then made their own straw spinners that work on wind power; when the students blow air into it, it spins. This experiment was a hit and a miss though, because it did not work for many students - I think I used a very thin straw and a larger straw might have been better.

March 8,2017
Today students learned about gravity and the effect of mass (amount of matter in an object) on gravity. They also learned that weight is dependent on gravity and that in space astronauts experience weightlessness.
The students created a toy that allowed them to notice the effect of mass on gravity . The toy was a shimmering bird that came down a thread due to gravity. We added paper clips to the bird to increase its mass. They noticed that as the number of paper clips added to the toy increased, its rate of descent decreased.

Session 1
March 1, 2017
Today students learned about habitats. They first created an animal using pipe cleaner and UV beads. Then they had to create a habitat and shelter for that animal. We tested out the shelter (with the animal in it) by taking it outside and checking the UV beads. If the beads changed color, the shelter was not perfect.

Today students continued their study of rocks by focusing on fossils ( usually found in sedimentary rocks). They learned that fossils are classified into four categories - trace, cast, mold and true form.
Students then created their own trace, cast and mold fossils using playdough, leaves, and some toy dinosaurs.

Today students learned about sedimentary rocks. They learned that weathering and erosion creates sediments and when the sediments get compacted (over millions of years) sedimentary rocks form.
The students (individually) weathered and eroded "crayon rocks". We then layered the crayon sediments and have placed it under heavy boxes to compact them. Next week we will check on our "rock" and hopefully we will have a sedimentary crayon rock!!

Today students continued to study about density. They deepened their knowledge by testing the density of various liquids. The liquids used in decreasing order of density were honey, corn syrup, maple syrup, dish soap, water, vegetable oil, rubbing alcohol, and lamp oil.
The students worked in teams and came up with a hypothesis by stating "According to my teammates and I, the density of the liquids in decreasing order is ...". They then tested their hypothesis to see if it was correct.

January 18, 2017
Today students learned about density. They learned that density is a characteristic property of a substance. Density of a substance is the relationship between the mass of the substance and how much space it takes up (volume).
Density = Mass (Amount of matter in an object)
____________
Volume (Amount of space occupied by the object)
The students performed an experiment using eggs, water, sugar and salt. They noticed that egg sank in regular tap water, but floated in salt water/sugar water because density of water is more than the egg when you add salt/sugar.

The first session will start on Wednesday, January 18th.
You can expect your child to learn about fossils, density, and weather.
